A 3rd interview with BOTF!

A third interview with Blood of the Fallen.  I want to give a huge thank-you to the guys in the band for being so willing to answer these questions.

NOTE:
BotF--Blood of the Fallen
I--Interviewer

I: What has been the response since releasing Havoc on the Ocean Floor?
BotF: The feedback we have received so far has been pretty positive, but it's still a bit too early to say for sure considering the EP is still fairly new.

I: Which song best represents Blood of the Fallen? Why?
BotF: "Open The Sky" is probably the best representative of Blood of the Fallen so far because it's the first track that we all wrote entirely together.

I: What is your favorite song on the album? Why?
BotF: As individuals, we all have our personal favorite songs based on lyrical content, flow, etc.. But again if we were to answer this as a band we could all agree on "Open the Sky" because, like we stated above, it was the first track that we wrote entirely as a full band.

I: Which song is your favorite to perform?
BotF: That's a tough one for all of us to answer because there are certain parts in every song that we all really get into while playing live.  It can change from venue to venue. It all depends on the energy of the crowd and the kind of vibe we get from the venue.

I: What is the typical song-writing process like?
BotF: We create a lot of songs simply from jamming and coming up with stems for songs. Usually we will record some of our jam sessions, take them home and work on them individually and bring our ideas to the table next time we jam.

I: How are song titles selected?
BotF:  Haha, sometimes they go through various working titles chosen by whoever started the song. Jimere changes them depending on how the lyrics turn out.

I: Which song was the most difficult to write?
BotF: There are parts in every song, instrumentally and vocally, that were actually difficult for all of us. To narrow it down though, we could all probably agree on "Chaos" and "Open the Sky."

I: How would you describe the overall writing and recording process?
BotF: To be honest, both are very stressful.  The writing involves a ton of repetitiveness and a lot of patience. The recording process is no different. There is a lot of time involved for both, and in the writing a lot of it is even just trial and error and finding what sounds best.

I: What was it like to wait so long for the release of Havoc on the Ocean Floor?
BotF: Honestly it was hell. The amount of times we had to say "it's almost ready; shouldn't be to long now; coming soon, etc..." was terrible. We all wanted to show off the finished product that we worked very hard on and actually have something we were able to release to the public that we could be proud of. It just took forever. That being said, now that it's out, we are extremely pleased with the way it turned out. As long as the wait was, it was well worth it.

I: What have you learned from this?
BotF: The number one thing we learned from this was the way we went about recording.  We were not able to just go in and record for two weeks straight. We had to do it a day at a time over the course of like 6-8 months, if not more, so it made things difficult.  When we start recording again we will be setting aside as much time as we need to get in and record everything in one shot. So for example, if we need 3 weeks, we will be recording for 3 weeks every day to get it done in a timely fashion.

I: Jimere: You recently came back from a show with a chipped tooth. Can you explain what happened?
BotF: We were finishing the night with "Chasing Your Voice" and we had these awesome guys who were so into the music moshing and just having a blast to our set. Because the band was on the better part of the stage, I shared the floor with the audience and was head banging and feeling the music with our moshers. At the final chorus of "Chasing Your Voice" one guys arm just hit my mic hard enough and hit me in the mouth. I felt my pupils dilate and my tooth on my tongue. I turned around in embarrassment and took the last long note to finish our set. Talk about timing.

I: How have the live shows changed since April?
BotF: We have definitely come together more as a band. Chris, Colin, and Jimere have a better idea of each others space on stage, they have been filling it out more rather than bunching together.  We have run into a few problems with sound guys at the last couple of shows we played (more on the point of they have no idea how to do their job). So obviously, that being said, we are going to be looking into finding a sound guy of our own.

I: What are the current plans for BOTF now?
BotF: At this point we are still playing as many shows as we can.  We have been trying to play more out of town shows to get our name out there in different areas.  Of course we are already working on new material and we have a few new stems in place. Keep checking our Facebook and our other social media networks for updates on any new news!

"Chasing Your Voice" lyrics:

If I am ungrateful,
I know a darker place.
Suspended (suspended) and waiting
for the end to take me (for the end to take me).
Still I can't fly.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
Without you here I have no choice.

It seems that I've been severed from all life.
(From all life).
Reaching for anything in need of me.
Tormented and waiting for the end to take me.
Don't pass me by.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
Without you here, I have no choice.

Those who surrender to my darkest hour.
I'll spare my life and lead you out of here.
Suspended and waiting for the end to take me.
Still I can't fly.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
(I hear you through the white noise).
Without you here, I have no choice.

Are you here?
I feel you near.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
(I hear you through the white noise).
I'm still chasing your voice!

Interview with BOTF, part 2

A second interview with Blood of the Fallen. Enjoy!!

NOTE:
BotF~Blood of the Fallen
CH~Colin Holman
SM~Stephen Miskie (Drums)
CB~Chris Black (guitars)
J~ Jimere (vocals)

Interview:

EE: How do the guys prepare for a live show?

BotF: As a band we like to get rid of those pre-show jitters with a shot of alcohol. Everyone in the band has a personal thing to do to get ready for a show.

CH: I personally get really hyper and can't calm my nerves. I jump around a lot and smoke A LOT!

SM: I'm always anxious to get up on stage! I usually have a beer with Colin lol. At this point I'm kind of over the stage fright thing I mean I still get a bit nervous but its nothing over the top!

CB: I watch Disturbed play live a lot on youtube beforehand, I also smoke a lot and I also run through the songs mentally (air guitar) to get a feel for the notes. I freak my GF out because I get into a very zen state and look pissed off when really I'm just focused.

J: Preparing for a show definitely includes many liquids if not all of my favourites including; Aloe vera, water, & tea. I also need to do various warm ups that day, but usually I spend little spurts of time during the day doing a different exercise in case I don't get around to a proper warm up. I usually have to listen to some pump up music which varies based on what kind of day I'm having. Right now it's "Watch yourself" by Ministry.

EE: What are the feelings geared toward the upcoming live performances?

BotF: We all get nervous but excited at the same time. Excited to get on, play music and have a good time.

EE: How have the setlists varied for the shows? Which one has worked best?

BotF: We've worked it around a little bit simply because Jimere is able to warm up his voice better on certain songs, obviously making the harder ones, easier for him to sing so the setlist we have right now is pretty solid. The show at The Mod Club our setlist was as follow:

Deep Waters
Chaos

Underneath
Open the Sky
Chasing Your Voice

EE: What has been different between shows? Lights? Crowd size? Crowd reactions? Which has been the best for BOTF?

BotF: We liked the Mod Club for the venue size and lighting but, we like Hard Rock Cafe for the sound. At this point the best show we had was our show at the Hard Rock Cafe June 1st because we had a great turnout and we played with a lot of good bands that night. Not to mention we got paid for it and we won the opportunity to have a free live music video shot for us.

EE: Describe the past live show visually and musically.  What was the best part? What can be improved?

BotF: The Mod Club was a great venue to play at. The venue where Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, and Nickleback played at! The only upsetting thing that happened to us was we didn't get a sound check and we didn't have a sound guy during our set. Visually it was awesome! It was the first time we got to play with a huge amount of stage lights and fog machines. Overall, even without a sound guy the sound wasn't terrible, just some of the levels were a bit off. Having a big stage gave us more of an opportunity to move around. We are looking into getting wireless systems so we can be cord free which will make moving around much easier!

EE: Why should people come out to see you live?

BotF: Because we are obsessive about our live sound, we are always doing everything possible to improve ourselves and we absolutely love bigger crowds. It's an energy exchange and our songs are easy to follow and great for crowd interaction.

EE: What can we expect from the professional live music video? Has filming already begun?

BotF: At this point we don't even know how it will turn out! We decided to do the music video at our show September 8th at the Opera House.

EE: Dream Large! If everything worked out perfectly, where would you tour? (the world is yours!) If you could tour with any artist, with whom would you tour with?

BotF: That's a good question! I think each band member would want to tour somewhere different!

CH: I want to do a massive European Tour! Also Australia because I always wanted to go there. The top 4 bands I want to tour with are Avenged Sevenfold, Evanescence, Adrenaline Mob, and Stone Sour.

SM: Truthfully it doesn't matter to me where we tour. I just want to be able to play for as many people as we can and spread our music around. :) I'm up for going anywhere!

CB: I would love to tour Japan and Europe. My ultimate goal would be to play Rock Am Ring or the Download festival. And I would absolutely love to Tour with Disturbed or Sevendust. Any band would be a trip because there are so many good ones out there.

J: This is hard because I've never really been anywhere. I think I'd like to play somewhere where I can instil hope and a connection with people who are less fortunate & who respect our music. I'd love to play with/ for my favourite artists one day but I think I'd enjoy playing with other musicians that are on our level. There's so much good music out there that hasn't been discovered yet. I'd love to play with Decades (Or at least Max Vernon), Isonic, The Artful Vandelays, Porpoise, Ninique Royer etc. However I think Touring with Tori Amos would probably be a very life changing experience.

EE: What songs are being played in your iTunes? (Two from each guy and two for BOTF as a group).

BotF: "Open the Sky" - Blood of the Fallen and "Chasing Your Voice" - Blood of the Fallen lol

CH: “The Ministry of Lost Souls” - Dream Theatre and “Say You'll Haunt Me” - Stone Sour

SM: "Follow the signs" - Born of Osiris and "Hourglass" - Lamb of God

CB: "Perfect Insanity" - Disturbed (Indestructible) and "Lean" - Dark New Day.

J: "Miracles" - Dave Gahan and "No Way" - The Naked & famous

EE: What is BOTF's opinion on the current recording industry? If you could change something about it, what would you change?

BotF: We have only been involved with one producer so far in our career and the only issue that we have so far is the turn around time. We have nothing to compare it to so we can't really complain but we feel that it would be different with each producer. As for the whole recording industry deal we feel that the major studios are slowly dying because of all the home studios that are popping up. Home studios are great for bands that are starting out because they give us the opportunity to get decent recording for a fraction of the cost.

EE: What are the hardest obstacles for the band?

BotF: Dealing with Colin's bullshit! no we're kidding we love him!

We would have to say the hardest obstacle that we have been deeling with so far is money. Not that we're poor lol but with the money that we put out for recording our ep and the gas for going back and forth to shows it leaves us pretty short to buy extra things such as merch.

***A huge thank you to the guys for taking special time aside to complete this interview!

"Underneath" YT

Lyrics:

It’s been years since I’ve seen my dreams.
Kept awake by voices underneath.
Every word or mark you leave I keep.
Reminds me why I go on breathing.

Underneath my skin you reign.
You’re the blood going through my veins.

I’m not gonna fade.
You’re only feeding my light.
And it shows the way (lead us) out of here alive.

(Out of here alive)

I’ve been down this wave of doubt before.
Lost my will to make it back to shore.
Learned to fly above your drowning world.
on a bed (on a bed) of stars.

Underneath my skin you reign.
I can’t let you throw this away.

I’m not gonna fade.
You’re only feeding my light
And it shows the way (lead us) out of here alive.

(Out of here alive)

(After your presence has faded, the guilt and the shame remain)

I’m ready to die once more.
And I knew you’d be back for more.

Rising up with every wave.
I'm Ready to wash you away.

I’m not gonna fade.
You’re only feeding my light.
And it shows the way (lead us) out of here alive.

(You’re only feeding your demise)

Out of here alive.

"Deep Waters" lyrics

Take it all.
Take it all.
But you can't take my soul.
Take it all.
Draw my blood.
But you can't take my soul.

It's yours to take.
All a part of your game.
I'm so far away now.
Down in a hole.
I dig deeper.
Suffocating all these feelings.

Forever and ever.

Take it all.
Take it all.
But you can't take my soul.
Take it all.
Draw my blood.
But you can't take my soul.

I give, you only take.
Far beyond your grace.
I'm all out of faith now.
For what it's worth.
I dig deeper.
Suffocating these feelings.

Forever and ever.

Take it all.
Take it all.
But you can't take my soul.
Take it all.
Draw my blood.
But you can't take my soul.

Take it all.
Take it all.
But you can't take my soul.
Take it all.
Take it all.
But you can't take my soul.

An Interview with BOTF

I had the honour to interview the Blood of the Fallen members, and today I'm sharing the interview with the fans!
Let me just say how awed I am of these guys.  They took specific time aside in order to do this interview (which they didn't even have to do), and they are always talking with their fans on Twitter.  They're a great band, and it's humbling to know them.  Enjoy!

NOTE:
BOTF~Blood of the Fallen
SM~Stephen Miskie (Drums)
CB~Chris Black (guitars)
J~ Jimere (vocals)
CH~Colin Holman

Interview:

EE: Why is the band named Blood of the Fallen? What were other names considered before BOTF was finalized?

BOTF: We came up with the name "Blood of the Fallen" because we wanted to honour the sacrifices of the men and women who gave their lives for us to live freely.

EE: What is the origin behind Blood of the Fallen? Did Chris and Stephen already know each other prior to September 2010? What made Jimere the vocalist to make the cut? How did Colin join BOTF?

BOTF: Nobody knew each other at the beginning. Stephen came across an ad on kijij that Chris posted stating that he was looking for a drummer to jam with. After a few jams they decided to look for other members to complete the band. After nearly one and a half years and a few auditions later Jimere found the band page on Facebook and sent us a message. He came out to audition and it quickly became apparent we had found our Vocalist. Colin saw an ad on Kijiji posted by BOTF as well looking for a bassist. We talked for a bit and then Colin came out to a few jams. Whether it was fate or luck we don't know but after the second jam we realized we all had something special. From that moment on BOTF was complete and we haven't looked back since.

EE: What musical influences shape BOTF? Non-musical?

BOTF: There are so many influences it would take forever to name them all. What makes us unique is the way we have been able to take all of our individual influences which span multiple genres and merge them into one harmonious sound. There's a bit of everything in our music. We would rather see what people think our influences are. We prefer not to label the band ourselves. We just write what we feel and leave the rest to people’s individual tastes when listening.

EE: Describe BOTF in 3 words.

BF: We think the three best words that describe us would be dedicated, passionate, and progressive.

EE: What simple phrase best describes BOTF?

BOTF: "Inveniam Viam Aut Faciam" Which is Latin for "I'll find a way or make one."

EE: What elements can we expect for the upcoming EP, "Havoc on the Ocean Floor"?

BOTF: An EP that reflects on the depth of our musical influences and brings multiple genres together in a way that can appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.

EE: "Havoc on the Ocean Floor" (the EP) along with "Underneath" and "Deep Waters" all consist of a watery theme. Why?

BOTF: To generalize it was a method to describe the deeper emotions that have a direct bearing on people’s lives. The Ocean is vast and this was a way that we felt would accurately portray those feelings.

EE: Will there be a specific theme for BOTF? (For example, a unified clothing style?)

BOTF: No theme. We believe strongly in individuality and we pride ourselves on the way we have managed to remain true to that.

EE: Let's have an introduction for the guys! Name, instrument, why/how you started playing, other
hobbies, and one word to describe yourself. Who's who in the band (the organizer, the prankster, the
serious one, et cetera)?

BOTF:
Chris started Guitar because his mom convinced him in high school that girls dug guitarists and very quickly he realized how much he enjoyed guitar and putting emotions into a universal language. Musical interest started much earlier however. Chris' mom was very much into Billy Idol and when Chris saw the music video for Rebel Yell it sparked an interest that wouldn't truly be awoken until the aforementioned conversation. Chris' family had a big interest in music of all varieties. Whether it was Crowded House, Ozzy Osbourne or the
Rolling Stones (dad) or Enigma, Pet Shop Boys, Billy Idol Native/Celtic Music or classical (mom) or Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Deep Dish, Chemical brothers, etc... (sister) there were a number of influences that ultimately shaped Chris' style. Chris spent his formative years listening to Glass Tiger, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, etc.... In terms of other Hobbies, Chris loves Hockey (Played it since he was a kid) whether he was playing it or watching his favorite team (Toronto Maple Leafs) it's been a big part of his life. Chris is also
heavily into cars and Auto racing. Whether it be drag or circuit or just customization. It's an expensive habit by his own admittance. The main characteristics Chris would use to describe himself are Loyalty, Faith, Spirituality, dedication Leadership, Courage and Family Oriented. Chris is a mommas boy and isn't afraid to admit it.

Stephen is actually a guitar player first, he’s been playing guitar for roughly 7 years. He took up drums about 3 years after he started playing guitar because he wanted more opportunities to jam with more musicians and being able to play multiple instruments made that possible. As far as other hobbies go, he is involved with the trades, such as auto mechanics, carpentry, a little bit of electrical and he also does some landscaping. He has been working with his dad for the last 4 years who is a jack of all trades so he has been involved with a lot of different things over the years. Some traits he used to describe himself were outgoing, honest, reliable, committed.

Colin is a drummer at heart and self-taught himself since the age of 14. He originally started playing guitar at 13 years old but lost interest in it. He wanted to switch to something different because a lot of his friends in elementary school were guitar players. The Christmas of 2004, his parents got him a drum kit and instantly got attached to them. In 2010, Colin picked up bass because he wanted to do something more than drums and really got interested in it and has played bass ever since. Colin has been an avid rocker since 12 years old. His dad still had all of his vinyl records from when he was a teenager. Colin's dad had everything from Aerosmith to Black Sabbath to The Beatles and Colin would spend most of his time listening to all of his dad's vinyl records. One of Colin's relatives is a bass player for the band Smash Mouth and he has inspired Colin to be the musician he is today. Other than music, Colin's hobbies include video games (big time), drinking excessive amounts but not borderline alcoholic, and whatever comes around. One word to describe Colin would be “Moose” because it has been his nickname since high school and stuck with it.

Jimere has always enjoyed singing passionate music ever since he can remember. At age 11 he
remembers writing lyrics for the first time & thinking “This is what I want to do”. Although primarily an artist, music became a 3 dimensional way of expressing emotions and repressed feelings. Moving around a lot his whole life has offered many different musical experiences including; church choirs, broadway camps, vocal/ piano training, & talent shows. Because of his artistic outlook and secluded personality Jimere picked up guitar after learning piano which allowed him to experiment & find himself as a musician. One word to describe Jimere would be Shapeshifter. Which is two words. :)

EE: Any outlandishly interesting things we should know about the guys? For example, a strange
addiction, obsession, or collection? Any cat-crazed guys?

BOTF:
SM: I have an addiction to getting tattoos. I got my first one when I was 16 and I haven’t looked back. As for collection, I like to think of myself as a beer connoisseur. I set out last year to try 100 different beers. Every weekend from January until around June a friend of mine and I went to the LCBO to buy a bunch of random beers. By the end of June we were actually over 100. We really thought it would take longer and that it would be harder to find 100 different beers but it was actually easy. We kept the bottles and the caps for every one that we tried and I made a shelf which is in the bands jam space that’s holding all of them!

CB: I have always had a strange fascination with Tornadoes and Severe weather. It started off as a deeply rooted fear as a child and as I got older my fear was replaced by fascination though everyone else calls it an obsession *laughs*. Most of the things that fascinate me were lifelong fears. Spiders are another example, though they still make my skin crawl and I have a great dislike for them when they are close to me.

J: I obsess over many little things. I love writing songs obviously & I’m always trying to push myself to write out of my comfort level. I horde a lot of weird crafty objects and things most people would throw away or look past. I don’t make a lot of things anymore but growing up I often made my own toys, creatures, & even pets. I don’t think I have any legitimate addictions, but when I feel I do I try to challenge myself against it.

CH: I have a mad crush on Jennifer Lawrence. I find her so damn sexy it's unbelievable and every time I see her I go into a deep trance. My biggest phobia is bats...I hate those creepy, hairy, gangly motherfuckers and my favourite villain is The Joker because he’s so manically evil! I'm highly addicted to salt water taffy, it's the best thing that man has created on this planet and if I had an unlimited supply of that delicious treat of the gods, I
would devour it like no other. You can also say I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

EE: You each get one wish. What is it? Why?

BOTF: As a group we would have to say our biggest wish would be to make our music known throughout the world. Yeah, anyone who says the money wouldn't be nice is lying but we all have a strong love for music and the bond we all share when we write music is something that we are all very proud of and content with. None of us will ever give up on BOTF or music because it is something we all love and as long as there are fans, no matter how few, as long as we can reach people on that deeper emotional level it's all worth it. Record deal is the ultimate goal but having a solid fan base and conveying our passion effectively through our chosen
instrument or form of expression wouldn't be settling for less as far as we are concerned. Music should be about artistic expression first. Everything else comes second. We realize that can be viewed as two wishes but we prefer to think of it as a two part single wish.

EE: Chris: exactly how many times has your G-string broke? ;)

CB: More times than I can remember *laughs*. I don't know if it's a sign or something, I won't lie G-Strings [clothing] are hot, but all undergarment references aside, for some reason, the only string I ever break on guitar is the G String. It cracks me up every time.

EE: And last, but not least!, how is everyone doing?

BOTF: I think we can safely say everyone is excited for what lies ahead: Completing the EP, building a fan base, getting to know other bands, playing in front of crowds of people, etc.

Lyrics:
If I am ungrateful,
I know a darker place.
Suspended (suspended) and waiting
for the end to take me (for the end to take me).
Still I can't fly.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
Without you here I have no choice.

It seems that I've been severed from all life.
(From all life).
Reaching for anything in need of me.
Tormented and waiting for the end to take me.
Don't pass me by.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
Without you here, I have no choice.

Those who surrender to my darkest hour.
I'll spare my life and lead you out of here.
Suspended and waiting for the end to take me.
Still I can't fly.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
(I hear you through the white noise).
Without you here, I  have no choice.

Are you here?
I feel you near.

I'm here.
I'm calling.
I am ready.
Can you hear me scream for eternity?
I'm still chasing your voice
(I hear you through the white noise).
I'm still chasing your voice!

We are an Alternative Hard Rock/Alternative Metal band located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. We started together in September of 2010 as Chris Black (Guitars) and Stephen Miskie (Drums) and as of November 2011 we have added Jimere Brian (Vocals). In January of 2012 we added Colin Holman on Bass. We are currently finishing up our EP "Havoc On The Ocean Floor". We have just recently released our first single "Chasing Your Voice" which can now be heard on our profile. Our Album Artwork can be seen there as well. Stacey Urquhart is the talented mind behind the design.
We are having a difficult time narrowing down who we sound like to be plainly honest. Guitar styles range from Linkin Park, to Flyleaf, to Disturbed, to Godsmack to Sevendust. Drum style is similiar to guitar as is Bass. The Vocals are very hard to place as there is no screaming involved. The Vocals are clean and are the glue that pulls everything together. Despite the occasionally heavier and faster riffs, Jimere has found a way to blend his style with ours. We wanted to create something that was fairly new stylistically but that didn't venture too far away from our roots. Hopefully we succeeded.

Influences

Disturbed, Linkin Park, Sevendust, Godsmack, Flyleaf and a style of electronics similiar to HIM.

Equipment List

Chris Black:
Schecter Diamond Series Gryphon w/Seymour Duncan Blackouts.
Crate GT1200H Solid State, 3 Channel Amplifier Head.

Stephen Miskie: Pearl Export ELX 6 piece kit. Pearl Hardware, Zildjian cymbals.

Colin Holman: LTD bass guitar, Gallien Krueger Amp.

(Kris of Sable wrote this poem while inspired by Blood of the Fallen's first single "Chasing Your Voice."  You can find him on Twitter at  @Mind_of_Sable ).

Death claiming me
Fear devours me
As I scream
A spine-chilling shriek
I fall again
Dead as I have ever been
Unable to hear
In this din
Trembling in fear
The room spins
Eyes burned by tears
I can’t let it in
The light draws near
I commit the ultimate sin
And end up here
Into hell I do peer
Flayed without skin
My flesh was sheared
By hook and pin
I chose this direction to steer
As my eyes grow dim
I see I belong here.
